SANGEETHA RASIKA SANGAM - December 2012

The 155th Program of Sangeetha Rasika Sangam, Chennai 92 was held at Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, Natesa Nagar, Virugambakkam P.O., Chennai 600092 on Sunday the 22 December 2012 - between 6.30 pm and 9.00 pm.

Dr Vasumathi Badrinathan was the vocalist. She was accompanied by Sri Melakaveri Thyagarajan on violin, Thanjavur Subramanin on Mridangam and Sri AS Krishnan on Morsing.

Dr Vasumathi Badrinathan started the concert with a Hayagriva Sloka. After a very brief frendering of a Varnam in the Raaga Nattai, she sang Raaga Sudha Rasa in Antholika. She was able to bring out the nuances of the Raaga with exemplary skill.

She then moved on to Raaga Lalitha. She elaborated in such a way that she brought out the pleasant and subtle elements of that Raaga in a very beautiful manner. Nannu Brova was the Krithi she chose to sing.

Kannada Raaga was her next choice in which Rishabham is Varjam in Aarohana. It is a Janya Raaga of Sankarabaranam.

She then deleanated in a sole stirring manner, the Raaga Ramapriya, a difficult Raaga, the 52nd Melam . In Dhikshadhar's parlance, this Raaga was also known as Ramamanohari. She displayed a great devotion in singing Mathangi Sri Raja Rajeswari of Dhikshidhar.

The main Raaga taken up for narration was Madhyamaavathi. The alapana of the Raaga was immensely delightful with its sweet fragrance visibly spreading across the audience. She handled Papanasam's Saravana Bhava in a unique manner that impressed the audience. The swara elaboration was also enchanting and inspiring. The violinist gave an effective follow up of the vocalist's rendition showing his masterly skill in the artistry. The mridhangist produced harmonious beats in Mridhangam and Thani played in co-ordination with Morsing was applauded cheerfully by the audience.

Dr Vasumathi then sang a beautiful old song viz., Thanthai Thai Irundhaal, in the Raaga Shanmuga Priya. The programme ended with Mangalam. Before conclusion of the concert, she sang a very nice Thillana.
