SANGEETHA RASIKA SANGAM - September 2010

The 130th Program of Sangeetha Rasika Sangam, Chennai 92 was held at Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, Natesa Nagar, Virugambakkam P.O., Chennai 600092 on Monday the 6th Sep 2010 - between 6.30 and 9.15 in the evening.

The artistes who featured in the concert were Sri M Chandraekaran along with his daughter Ms Bharathi-Violin, Sri Sri Umayalpuram Mali on the Mridhangam and Sri Srivatsan on the Ganjira.

The programme started with a brisk rendering of Vinayaka in Hamsadwani. Following this, Sri Chandrasekar handled bowle raga crisply and Sambo Mahadeva stirred the hearts of the rasikas taking them to heights of ecstacy.

Bowle is a Janya raga of 15th Melam Maya Malagowlam with swara structures. Sa ri Ga pa dha s and Sa Nee dha pa Ga ri s on the ascending and descending scales respectively. Sri Chandrasekar's handling of Najeevadhava in Bilahari was touchy and inspirational. Smt Bharathi made the raga shine in true colours. 'Ranjani' was rendered with divine melody. A Sahitya 'Dhathu theregi composed by Ganapathy Sachidhanandam Swamigal and tuned by Sri Narayanaswami shone brilliantly through duo's instruments. Ranjani having Swarfa scales Sa Ra ga Ma Dha s and Sa Nee dha Ma ga sa Ri s and being a janya of 59th Melam Dharmavathi produced aesthetic appeal and endeared the audience nearer to the artistes.

The main raga taken up for full elaboration on the violin was Sankarabaranam. Tne most traditionally popular song Swara Raga Sudha, in Adi Thala, Irattai Kalai made a distinct mark on the programme. The Madhyama Kala Swara rendition brought the nicety and graneur of the raga into sharper focus both Shri Chandrasekhar and Smt Bharathi handled the strings to produce subtler effects of the divine characterisation of the raga.

Sri Umayalpuram Mali's percussion instrument produced symmetric beats creatging a Laya appeal.

Sri Srivatsan's Kanjira performance was all the more praise worthy and the duo's role in percussion during Thani was exemplary. The audience cheered them up through a louder applause.
